Where and How to Adopt
There are a lot of great shelter and rescue organizations in and around Chicago where you can go to adopt your new pet. Each organization has its own criteria for adoption approval and its own way of proceeding through the adoption process. It’s important to remember that they all have one goal in mind, and that is to find good homes for the dogs and cats (and bunnies, rats, hamsters…) in their care.
The adoption organizations will ask you questions and have you fill out applications, and some may do home visits and call landlords and references too. This is all done to ensure that the pet is going to an appropriate home where it will be happy and healthy and will hopefully remain for its lifetime. They want to make sure you are getting the pet that is right for you and the pet is getting the family that is right for him or her. They want to do everything in their power to make sure the pets are a good fit for everyone and that they don’t get returned or rehomed down the line. This can be very traumatizing for a pet and can cause life long issues.
